I have saved the actual name of the utility for last because there is more than 1 "arc" and/or 'un-arc" utility. Each author has written the utility for the same purpose but each in their own way and sometimes the resulting arc files have been incompatible. The arc utilities (both arc and un-arc) which perform the fastest and are the most widespread are those of Phil Katz.
